In repeated reviews, this was hyped as Kurosawa’s greatest. I can recognize why, it’s the right story, the right innovations, the right mise-en-scene. Perhaps it wasn’t the right time to watch, as I was never really engaged. Should I watch it again as homework? Should I do a bunch of research on it? Do I need to consult a professional? Oh well, at least the criterion treatment of it was gorgeous.
