Surprisingly intense, the open scenes do not belie what will happen in the coming years. Fugui gambles until everything he owns is gone, his house, his wife and his father. A cloud with silver lining, as when the Communists take power he and his family then belong to the lower class. What starts with Fugui seeking redemption, becomes a compelling depiction his family’s struggle to survive under Maoist China.
