I think I found my limit. Kwaidan is hauntingly beautiful, but too slow. I ended up breaking into three separate viewings after fighting to stay awake through the first two ghost stories. Of course the last story was the fastest and the shortest. Kobayashi’s film reminds me of Tarkovsky with its focus on beautiful floating images, be it smoke, water or blood. The Ghost stories themselves are good, the film beautiful, I recognize why I had put this on my list. The pacing was just too slow.
