The Marquise Of O

Viewed: 23 March 2005
Directed by: Eric Rohmer

An exercise in the frustration of formality, a widow in 18th century Italy mysteriously becomes pregnant, without her knowledge of who the father is. The film deals with her coming to grips with pregnancy and a Russian count’s reluctance to admit that he raped her. The characters can hardly put the pieces together, even with all the evidence points to the count. Finally the Widow’s cold and distant Brother figured it out, to the disbelief of all involved. I seem to still miss something with Eric Rohmer. I first I thought it was a relationship thing, but after the Marquise of O, I think I just don’t pick up on the psychological trauma.
