The hellish home life of Antoine is not without its fun, but is mostly it’s a painful experience. It’s not that his parents don’t love him, just that they can’t change there lives in order to nurture and support him, you know parent him. Escape from his confines is the only choice for Antoine. A delight on the Criterion edition is the 16 mm audition tape of 14 year old Jean-Pierre Léaud. Seeing the same personality from so many films emerging ties Jean-Pierre and Antoine Doinel even closer together. In my mind there is no separation between actor and character.
